New Zealand's resident population was estimated to be over 4.3 million at 30 June 2009.
76% of all New Zealanders live in the North Island. 54% live in the Northern region including the Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions. Auckland has a population of 1.2 million, which is 33% of the total population.
Those living in Auckland are more likely to earn higher incomes, have a better education, live in larger households and be slightly younger than the average New Zealander.
Retail sales for the year ending September 2009 for all New Zealand were over $64 billion. Auckland's retail sales for the same period were over $20 billion.
